Azienda Agricola Giovanni Sordo is an iconic winery with 100 years of history. It is a family-run estate and one of the biggest privately own estates in the Langhe. The estate comprises 53 ha of land and produces 8 Barolo crus (the largest Barolo selection available on the market), among which the famous Monprivato. The company is based in Castiglione Falletto, surrounded by some of their vineyards.
Giorgio is the third generation owner, managing the vineyards himself while the wines have always been made under the supervision of the well-known oenologist Armando Cordero, who worked at Sordo until his death,
some years ago. Today the new winemaker follows the protocol left by Mr. Cordero. He works alongside Giorgio who is an active participant in the winemaking process too.
Azienda Agricola Giovanni Sordo is a traditionalist, focusing on the production of very elegant Barolo, aged in big Slavonian botti. His uniqueness is the possibility of producing wines that show the same style of winemaking across the different terroir ranges, thus expressing what the precious heart of the Langhe zone can offer. The practice of green manure shows Sordo’s uttermost respect for the land.
The estate’s production is varied. It covers white wines such as Langhe Bianco (a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Viognier), Langhe Chardonnay, Langhe Sauvignon and Langhe Bianco Viognier in ‘purezza’ (a very tiny production). Also the local variety, Roero Arneis Wine is celebrated alongside a sparkling wine, Alta Langa DOCG, made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with 36 months of aging on the lees. The main part of the production revolves around red wines. The range includes fruity and vibrant Dolcetto, Barbera , Langhe Rosso and Verduno Pelaverga (a wine made from a local grape called Pelaverga Piccolo) to more structured wines like Nebbiolo d’Alba and Barbaresco.
Just this year, Azienda Agricola Giovanni Sordo has joined London Awards for the second time and as expected, their wines have received a Gold and a Silver award.

According to Elisa Rabino, Export Director of Azienda Agricola Giovanni Sordo, the very important trait of the company is its philosophy regarding pricing. Sordo wants to produce fine wines that are unique but that people can afford to drink and enjoy on a daily basis.

Today, Sordo is present in almost all the countries and collects recognitions and awards constantly. This is due to its active marketing team and the ability of the export managers. The company takes part in the main worldwide events and participates in wine fairs all around the world. They also started exporting their wines many years ago. Their strategy is to seek the right brand positioning for the family brand. They are improving more and more the quality, the environmental sustainability and increasing their presence around the world.
Visitors are welcome to pay a visit to the winery any time of the year. They will be guided through the winery, taste the wines while enjoying one of the best views of the Langhe region (La Morra breath-taking view). In the not too distant future, customers will also have the chance to taste some of the most delicious local dishes at the on-site restaurant that is being built, opposite the wine showroom.
